The Ultimate Senior Year Bucket List

Senior year is going to be your best year yet! It’s one of those seasons you’ll remember for the rest of your life. It’s filled with football games, pep rallies, late-night drives with friends, college applications, prom, and all the little moments in between that somehow become the memories you treasure most. Before you know it, you’ll be walking across the stage, wondering where the time went. Whether you’re a high school senior looking for fun ways to make the most of your final year or a senior mom wanting to help your teen soak up every moment, this Senior Year Bucket List is for you (and your friends).

As a South Louisiana senior photographer serving New Iberia and the Acadiana area (and a Mom of a young adult), I’ve seen just how quickly this season flies by, and I know how special it is to preserve both the big milestones and the everyday moments that you’ll want to look back on.

So grab your best friend, your mom, or your favorite notebook, and start checking off these ideas. From Friday night lights and late-night ice cream runs with friends to heartfelt moments with family, here are some ideas to make your senior year extra special.

1. Celebrate the First Day of Senior Year

There’s no better way to kick off your last year of high school than with a “last first day of school” or “first day of senior year” photo. Make a cute sign or banner, look extra cute that day, and recruit someone to snap a few photos before you head off to school.

Pro Tip: Take the photo outside, in the morning shade for best lighting.

Now congratulate yourself for checking off the first thing on your Senior Year Bucket List!

2. Attend Every School Event You Can

Even if school events aren’t your thing, make a point to do it anyway…you’ll never regret the memories you make during your last year of high school. There’s just something different about Senior year, and it’s the perfect time to step outside of your comfort zone and have some fun!

Go to the games.

Participate in Spirit Week (even if you look ridiculous…that’s the point).

Be LOUD for pep rallies (because how embarrassing for your Senior class to lose the spirit contest).

Go to Homecoming.

Grab a date or a friend, wear the dress, and go to Prom.

3. Take Lots of Pictures

Snap away…every chance you get. Not just professional senior portraits. I’m talking about hanging out with friends, study sessions, Friday night football, band practice, cheer competitions, choir concerts, baseball games, art projects, getting ready for prom, graduation rehearsal…you get the picture (pun intended).

Future you will love looking back on these everyday moments.

Pro Tip: Also know when to put down the camera (phone) and just enjoy the moment.

4. Go to Senior Sunrise

Meet friends early one morning to watch the sunrise before school. Some schools do this on the football field, but if your school doesn’t, just meet up at a park or invite friends over to your house. Bring coffee and breakfast, and talk about what you might want to do after graduation when the sun rises on your next chapter.

5. Watch a Senior Sunset

Do the same near graduation to celebrate the end of the year.

6. Make a Senior Time Capsule

I actually wish I would have done this one with my daughter her senior year. Find a waterproof box or plastic container and put some of the following items in it:

  • Favorite snacks
  • A letter to your future self
  • School ID
  • Ticket stubs
  • Photos
  • Favorite playlist
  • Current trends
  • Small souvenirs
  • Newspaper from that week

You can even include things you did from this Senior Year Bucket List.

Then give it to Mom to store away for the next 10 years!

7. Write Thank-You Notes

It’s pretty common for people to write thank you notes for gifts received for graduation, but consider beyond that…thank the people who helped you get here. Is there a teacher or a coach who has really impacted your life in high school? Is there a friend you couldn’t have survived high school without? Take the time to write them a little note of appreciation.

8. Visit Your Favorite Places One More Time

Once you’re out of high school, your life will likely change…you’ll start hanging out with different people, go to different places, and maybe even live in a different city. Take the time before graduation to visit those places you frequent with friends or family. Go hang out at your favorite local coffee shop, or snowball stand. Have a picnic at your local park. Have one last meet-up at your favorite after school hang out. Just take in all your “lasts.”

9. Create the Ultimate Senior Playlist

No Senior Year Bucket List would be complete without your favorite tunes. Because who doesn’t love a good playlist?! What song do you and your friends immediately start dancing to when you hear it? How about the song that was playing when you had your first kiss? Or the song that you and your bestie can listen to on REPEAT? Include all the songs that remind you of special moments, fun times, or even those that were a comfort during times of heartbreak or disappointment.

10. Try Something New

When you’re in high school, your days are likely filled with extracurricular activities, homework, and activities. But after graduation, most of those things will end and you’ll be left wondering who you are and what you’re supposed to do (besides work).

So, start trying new things NOW…find some hobbies that you really enjoy. The only way to do that is to try different things. Learn how to bake something or cook your favorite meal. Paint some pottery. Go hiking. Visit some place you’ve never been before. Create something you can give to your friends as a gift. Learn how to sew or crochet. Repurpose furniture. Learn woodworking. The possibilities are endless. Bonus points if you ask a friend to join you.

11. Spend Time With Family Before Senior Year Ends

Senior year is a busy one. And as a parent myself, I get it. You’d much rather hang out with your friends than your family who you have seen every day for the last 17-18 years. I know because I was the same way. But hear me out. Your family has likely made a lot of sacrifices for you over the years, and they are just as excited as you are about this next phase of life you’re about to enter. It’s also a bittersweet time for them…a time of letting go and not really wanting to.

So, make a point to spend quality time with your family doing something fun…even if it’s only once or twice a month. Have a movie night together with popcorn and your favorite candy. Have Mom prepare a few finger foods and do a family game night around the table. Spend the day shopping with your Mom, or fishing with your Dad. It will mean the world to them, and in 20 years you’ll look back on it and be glad you did.

12. Make a College or Career Vision Board

This is fun to do with a small group of friends, especially around the New Year. Invite a few friends over to make vision boards. You’ll just need a bulletin board or foam board, scissors, glue, tape, any scrapbooking type materials or decorations you may want and some magazines or printed photos.

You can include your dream school’s logo, or maybe a picture of their mascot. Think about potential career goals or places you’d like to travel and include pictures and words representing those. You can also include bible verses, prayers, and inspirational quotes. There’s no right or wrong way to create YOUR vision board.

13. Ask Friends to Sign a Journal

Instead of signing a yearbook which you may not get until after you graduate, ask close friends to write favorite memories, advice, inside jokes, or just words of encouragement in a journal or photo album. I still go back from time to time to see what my classmates wrote. You may even be surprised by a few of them.

14. Have a High School Senior Cap Decorating Party

If your school allows cap decorating, invite friends over to decorate graduation caps together.

15. Make a Graduation Countdown

Whether it’s on a calendar, a paper chain or a phone countdown, enjoy the anticipation of what’s to come.

16. Go on a Best Friend Senior Road Trip

This one Mom may be a little nervous about you doing on your own (give her some grace).  Even if you have to bring Mom with you, take the trip. Girl’s trips are always so much fun!

17. Have One Last Sleepover

Plan a sleepover with your closest friends, stay up all night, watch movies, do something crafty, play games, and talk about your deepest desires. It may be the last time you get to do this.

18. Schedule Professional Senior Portraits

This is one of the few times in life dedicated entirely to celebrating who you are right now.

Choose a location and outfits that reflect your personality so years from now, your photos still feel like you.

Senior year only happens once. Whether you’re counting down to graduation or soaking up every last high school memory, your senior portraits are one more way to celebrate this exciting chapter. Not to mention, they make Mom really happy!

Not feeling very confident in photos? I got you! Check out my blog post on How to Feel More Confident in Front of the Camera.

Dear Senior Moms…

Senior year has a way of speeding by much faster than we’d like. Between college applications, football games, prom, graduation announcements, and all the little moments in between, it’s easy to feel like you’re trying to hold onto time…because you are.

Take the pictures. Get in a few of them yourself. Celebrate the ordinary moments alongside the big milestones. Years from now, your senior won’t remember every assignment they turned in, but they’ll remember the laughter around the dinner table, the late-night ice cream runs, the movie and pizza nights, and the people who cheered them on every step of the way.

Those are the memories worth holding onto.

If you’re looking for a senior photographer in the Acadiana area, I’d love to help you create photos that feel natural, fun, and uniquely you—memories you’ll be glad to look back on long after the tassel has been turned.
